vSphere 8 – HCL is limited to newer servers
Danny Alvarez posted something this past week regarding his findings on what server vendor hardware is supported for vSphere 8.
His list covers a majority of my VMware customers….
and he calls out that the following models are supported for vSphere 8:
Cisco -M5
Dell – Gen14
HPE – Gen10
Nutanix – G7
Check out the VMware HCL for servers here, and plan accordingly!!!!
….and remember…you vCenter can be 8.x, and your ESXi hosts can be 7.x.
VMware NSX 4.0.1.1 Released
Don’t forget, NSX-T is now called just NSX.

vSphere 8 with Tanzu – Automated Lab
William Lam has been creating these nested environments for quite a few years now, and recently updated it to run vSphere 8…..and only use 32-GB RAM!
Check out his post here.
VMware Tanzu Community Edition – no more
Tanzu CE has been retired, and in its place, VMware is now pushing folks to TKG (Tanzu Kubernetes Grid)…..with a free 100-core license.
Obviously….for non-production workloads.
VMware post about this is here.
DPU – Using in HPC Environments
Want a quick summary of what a DPU might be used for in vSphere 8?
Quite a few ways this could benefit you, though it may not all be here today.

ESXi 8.0 – booting fails with Error 10 (out of resources)
Chatting about this on Twitter with people.
My gut stated it was a deprecated CPU, but it turns out….
Was just a server using a BIOS vs UEFI….

vGPU pass-thru error – LIBNVIDIA-VGX.SO
Frank Denneman came across error and shared the solution this past week.
If you are passing a GPU to a VM, and get an error:
“Could not initialize plugin ‘libnvidia-vgx.so – Check SR-IOV int he BIOS”
Frank’s post is here with the answer.
vSphere 8 – CPU topology for VMs
There are lots of reasons I tend to avoid cores-per-socket.
The big one is for consistency in deployment.
Now, for large VMs (8+CPUs, technically), there are considerations here that are given, and the way you can control that in vSphere 8 has changed.
Frank also dives into mapping to PCI devices per NUMA node….
Frank Denneman’s post on this is here.
Red Hat – No-Cost Enterprise Linux licenses?
Yup, you can get up to 16 RHEL instances for non-prod use.
Developers or Individuals….
Got this from one of my workshops attendees this past week (who happened to work at Red Hat)….
Red Hat Developer link is here.
Nutanix – TPMs & AHV/ESXi
Not exactly sure what a TPM is?
Do I need a TPM to use vTPM (you should have a TPM, though)?
How does it work along with UEFI & Secure Boot?
A great 3 minute read for an overview of these capabilities.

NDB (Nutanix Database) – how patching gets simplified
Schedule & automate patching? Yes please!
Have a nearly instant roll-back plan already in place? Must have!
Rather just be notified? that’s there too.
