Virtual Updates 2024-01-22

It’s a very short post this week.
Been trying to hold off to get more details on the VMware side of things…

VMware & The Broadcom acquisition
So it’s been about 6 weeks now, and lots of news around this.
Nothing concrete of course, but lots of tidbits of information.
Just a lot of things all going on at once can be a bit…overwhelming?
Dec 11 – Broadcom simplifies Licensing.
Dec 11 – VMware Horizon & VMware Carbon Black “up for sale”
Dec 21 – Broadcom hands VMware Partners “Termination Notice”
Dec 29 – Broadcom ending VMware Channel Program.
Jan 8 – William Lam Highlighting VCF and VVF and other offerings
Jan 17 -Himanshu Singh posted VVF (VMware vSphere Foundations)
Jan 16 – Aria Simplification (licesnsing, cause its part of VCF now)
(VCF – vCloud Cloud Foundation, and VVF – VMware vSphere Foundation)

Need a script to identify your vSphere Cores & TBs?
Something we will all need with the cutover to subscription based licensing.
William Lam has you covered in his latest post.
I have created a PowerCLI function (Get-FoundationCoreAndTiBUsage) that will inventory your existing vSphere environment and provide a detailed report on the number of CPU Core and/or TiB license count that would be required whether you are considering the VVF or VCF offering.
This actually points you to VMware KB 95927 to get the script (top of the page, right column).
It has the logic and the rules for determining what you need for the subscription based licensing.

vSAN ESA & Key Rotation
The operations here differ from vSAN OSA key rotation.
Important to note, given the differences between OSA & ESA.
Peter Koehler wrote it up nicely.
VMware Tech Zone post is here.

Google Cloud removes data transfer fees
….when switching to rival cloud providers.
Reuters article is here.
Wonder if AWS & Azure will start offering this too…

Windows & Linx – NTP/Win32Time – best practices
Revisiting documentation while studying to update my VCAP-DCV Design
(which in turn is required for my VCIX and VCDX updates).
Timekeeping best practices for Linux guests
Timekeeping best practices for Windows, including NTP
Reclaiming VMFS deleted blocks on Thin Provisioned LUNs

MBSS (Mathematically Beautiful Screensavers)
Was always my favorite Windows Screen Saver.

(it is shareware, but its only $15)

Nutanix Community Edition – getting it deployed on ESXi
Yes, ESXi.
Still no AHV ability, for those of us using AHV.
You have to run this on ESXi…….
With SO MANY CUSTOMERS looking at Nutanix + AHV….this is how they are demoing it internally (putting it through tis paces).
TEAMs….this is not the normal deploy….
This is the COMMUNITY EDITION!!!!…
The deploy is very different than Nutanix Hardware deployment….
Still, this post covers a lot of the details….
