Virtual Update 2019-05-13

VMware Visios of VVD with NSX-T
OK, so Visio’s might not be exciting….but take a look here.
So many good diagrams that you can use for NSX-T, SDDC, Networking configurations,……well worth the 10 minutes to download and check out the 3 drawings in this ZIP.

NUMA / vNUMA / Design & Considerations
Frank Denneman & Johan van Amersfoot host another ITQ lightboard.
This is awesome.
I have been sharing this same drawing with customers for years when discussing the sizing of VM workloads, CPU Ready %, constraints based on the hardware of the server you select (though with high CPU core counts today, this last bit is less of a constraint).
34 minutes long, and ABSOLUTELY worth watching!!!!

VeeamON is next week
I am unable to attend this event, so hoping to get feedback from my team to share here…..
Let me know if you see something at VeeamON that excites you!

VMware EMPOWER
The last of the VMware EMPOWER events is next week in Lisbon.
Perhaps there will be a final set of updates announced? We’ll have to wait and see….

VMware / Microsoft / Dell together on EUC
This was pretty surprising, but looks like this has promise.
Many posts were made when this got announced at DellEMC world, I’ll link a few here.
Better future for VMware Workspace ONE integration with Windows 10, Office 365, SCCM, Intune, and WVD (Windows Virtual Desktop) on Azure.
VMware Press release on the topic.
VMware blog post on VMW/MSFT/Dell partnership by Shankar Iyer.
Microsoft post on VMW/MSFT/Dell partnership by Scott Guthrie.

CloudSimple
Came out of stealth recently. I have some friends working there, and now I know what they have been so excited about….
This is a platform that enables VMC on Azure (more coming….)
Here is a link to a two minute overview on YouTube.
Here is the Microsoft Azure CloudSimple main page.
…and of course, CloudSimple‘s web page.

VMConAzure & VMConDellEMC (VMware Cloud on Azure or DellEMC)
Remember 2 years ago when VMware announced VMC (VMware Cloud on AWS)? Well, now the names for VMC are getting a bit more desciptive….
VMConAWS
VMConAzure
VMConDellEMC
All of these are fully managed hardware, software solutions where you essentially are consuming VMs as a Service (I know that’s not exact, but it is a decent analogy)…..
VMConDellEMC is the fully managed SDDC, but on premises….
VMware’s Kit Colbert had a post the day this was announced.
Thomas Maurer, a Microsoft Cloud Advocate, posted on his blog right after then announcement about VMC on Azure.

VMware SRM – Finally ….an Appliance!
With the release of VMware SRM 8.2 last week, you can now deploy SRM as a Virtual Appliance!
That leaves VMware View and vRealize Automation components as the last thing to run on Windows Servers.
Something to be aware of….the SRAs (Storage Replication Adapters) have different downloads than their Windows based counterparts.
It looks like the Import/Export feature will come in very handy as people migrate to the appliance.
Migrating to the Appliance requires you upgrade your Windows SRM installation to 8.2, THEN you can migrate to the Virtual Appliance.
Initial installation & configuration is greatly simplified!!!
VMware Blog post about this release.
Release Notes are here.
Product Documentation is here.
vRealize Operations Management packs updated as well….

vRealize Log Insight – no more “free” licenses with vCenter
I knew this was coming, and have shared that information with my customers. Not the end of the world, but if you want to keep that 25-OSI pack running, you need to purchase it now.
Matter of fact….vSphere 6.7 u2 is only supported on vRLI 4.8.
VMware KB 55980 covers the details.

Nutanix Mine – Backup Integration
Nutanix had a lot of announcements last week.
Frame (VDI) solution running on AHV.
LCM for hardware vendors.
And of course, Mine, which will be backup integration.
Veeam is first in the list, with Veritas, Commvault, and others following.
Found short sweet blog post about it here.
Here is the main Nutanix Mine page.

Nutanix – Scalability, Resiliency, Performance
A series of posts by Josh Odgers, that was posted 6/2018.
Came across it while doing a design, and looking for references….reminded me of this value this series of posts has when/if considering a Nutanix platform (be it for ESXi or AHV).
