Virtual Updates 2023-10-09

MGM Resorts – Initial Analysis
I’m sure you’ve heard about this by now.
Here is an initial analysis posted on cyber ark.

vSphere 8.0 Update 2
So yes, another maintenance release.
BUT, some cool things were added.
My first favorite, is using “deploy from template” workflow…using an answer file, and joining an AD Domain, you can now specify an OU (Organization Unit) for the computer object.
This is configured in “VM Customization Specifications”
ou=Microsoft,ou=Servers,ou=prod,dc=vmware,dc=wei
VMware Blog post about what’s new in 8.0 Update 2 is here.
VMware Release Notes are here.

Still on vSphere 7.0?
Not a big issue, even though vSphere 8.0 is out…
(just remember….End of Support for vSphere 7 is April 2, 2025)
Also, please note vCenter 7.0 Update 3o is out.
Release Notes are here.

vSAN Stretched Cluster – 2 x Isolation Addresses?
Yes please.
Duncan Epping posted recently about this vSphere Cluster Advanced setting.
Having 2 isolation addresses, 1 in each location.
Just be sure they are accessible from the vSAN network….that’s where HA runs when you have vSAN turned on.
VMware documentation is being updated to discuss these setting in more detail.

vSAN Max – advantages of scale out storage
Need more capacity?…add more drives.
Need more CPU resources?…add more nodes.
A quick VMware Blog post by Peter Koehler.

vSAN ReadyNode Emulated Configuration – huh?
essentially….finding a ReadyNode configuration versus build your own.
If the ReadyNode doesn’t have the right quantity of things (CPU, RAM, NVMe drives, etc), so long as they are on the VCG (VMware Compatibility Guide), you are building a supported vSAN node.
Note…only for ESA and vSAN Max.
Duncan Epping simplifies it here.

vSAN Max ReadyNode

New VMware HOL for Aria Operations
Aria Operations – Getting More Out of it! (HOL-2401-02-CMP)
15 modules….that’s quite a bit for an HOL.
Goes through a lot, and takes quite a few hours….

RVtools – purchased by Dell
Saw it on William Lam’s blog first….
Here it is is from the source

MSFT Teams for VDI – Horizon View
Want to install/update to a VDI tuned Microsoft Teams?

Raspberry Pi 5
An update to Raspberry Pis!
It has been 4 years since the Pi 4 was introduced.

Veeam for Nutanix – v5 released
Finally, working in the normal Veeam Console for my Nutanix AHV workloads.
MFA support too!
Haven’t tested yet, but I would expect it is another EXE to install after Veeam Backup & Replication is installed.
Veeam Blog post is here.
