Virtual Updates 2023-11-06

VMware Security Update
This CVE requires an update to VMware Tools.
You do Update VMware Tools, right?
For linux OS’s, use the appropriate package manager to update open-vm-tools.

VMware acquisition … we are still waiting….
For whatever reason, the Broadcom acquisition of VMware has not been completed at the end of October.
Read into that what you will.
VMware Blog post is here….doesn’t say too much.

New GuestOS Data from VMware Tools – vSphere 8.0 Update 2
Further enhancements to VMware Tools to get OS information.

SEC charges CISO of SolarWinds?
Wow…being held accountable.
I am not a lawyer, or an expert in any way on these topics being discussed around SolarWinds….
SEC Gov page post is here on this topic.

RVtools – first Dell Update (that I’ve seen).
RVtools is now up to version 4.4.5.
changes the install path to Program Files (x86)\Dell
That’s lazy in my opinion….
Kudos to Dell for keeping the site the way it is (for now…we’ll see).

VMware Flings – now developer.vmware.com/samples
Yup.
Flings is no longer, but available at developer.vmware.com/samples.
I don’t like the look of it…..but that’s just me.
Guess it wasn’t seen as important by Broadcom (even though the entire user based and many prod products have been proven here).
William Lam post on this (though Flings will be down by the time this is posted)
Many of the contributors have started posting on GitHub.
While developer.vmware.com/samples might have useful things, it does not look as busy as Flings did…..

VMware Homelab note…
Someone did a long post about a piece of hardware from ProtectLI
Looks cool, and does 64-GB or RAM.
Has 6 x NICs.
Supports 2.5-GbE (not sure if all ports are that).

Repurposing Hardware for ESXi / vSAN
was working this with a customer this past week.
Had issues where 2 other POCs (proof of concepts) had used this gear before we got it….and of course, all the SSDs were already corrupted….
Yuck…..
So the customer actually found this link (which is WAY better than the VMware pages that call out how to delete those SSD partitions that were causing us problems using this hardware for a vSAN POC.

Veeam 12.1
A blog post from the Veeam 100 summit this past week.
My takeaway?
More focus on ransomeware, detecting it, and making that type of information available to your RESTORE team, as well as your BACKUP team.

ManualLib – User Manuals Repo
Got a piece of old gear that you need the user manual for?
https://www.manualslib.com has you covered!
I looked up a Singer 237 (an OLD sewing machine), & it was there.
Put this link aside, so when you need to fix whatever appliance breaks, you have manuals that you can reference….
