Virtual Updates 2021-08-23

It’s been a bit quite this past week…
With lots of my focus on Nutanix & VMware, and their annual conferences coming up soon….news is s little bit light…
End of September and mid-October posts will be right after the conferences, so I expect that at that time, lots of interesting things to chat about…

vCenter 7.x – Integrating Identity Provider for MFA
Security has taken a more prominent place in our day to day.
Especially when running/managing an infrastructure.
Since vSphere 7.x has a few options (only a few) for MFA, WEI has been helping quite a few of our customers move towards this extra layer of AAA (Authentication, authorization, access) into vSphere environments.
Take a look at the options, and realize it is NOT as hard as it could be to do this.

vRealize Log Insight – Agent Configuration
If you are using vRLI & want to get the most out of it, you need to configure your VMs (or physical hosts) with the vRLI agent.
Matt Bradford (@VMspot) walks you through the agent configuration in
an 8-min YouTube video.

Microsoft SQL Server Big Data Clusters on VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid
That’s a mouthful.
Lengthy post, but it should be, as this is a complex setup.

Nutanix Powershell Commandlets 2.0
Finally.
Always felt that the PowerShell command lets for Nutanix were a bit weak.
This looks so much better….
Now, off to play with these for the next week or so, and create a PowerShell script to do the full cluster configuration!

Nutanix Prism Central – renaming PC
This makes life easier, especially when you are looking at the Nutanix Support & Insights page of your Nutanix Account.
This post also has links back to the appropriate documentation.
Now you should be able to adjust your PC’s name, and see it (24 hours) in Support & Insights page.

Nutanix Prism Central – HA/BC (maybe DR?) in 2021.7
Artur Kryzwdzinski recently posted about the new capabilities for maintaining operations if the cluster running Prism Central has an issue.
Is it perfect yet?….no.
Is this moving in the right direction? YES!
(I have been wishing that vCenter had this capability after nearly 20 years….)
While this new capability is great for HA/BC/DR….it is not exactly backup (if you replicate bad data….you now have 2 copies of bad data).
Read his post here.

Migrating VMs between AHV Clusters
I’m surprised it took this long, but it is finally here!
…and the video even looks like it does this across Prism Central instances!
The 3:40 YouTube video showing this capability is here.

Nutanix – To Dedupe or Not…
With Nutanix, there are all sorts of best practices defined.
With the Storage Containers, there are quite a few combinations of Compression and Dedupe to tweak, depending on your workload.
This .Next post highlights the use cases, and links to its references.
Don’t worry….my gut instinct told me to use dedupe incorrectly for VDI the first time I did it.
