It’s a very short post this week.
Been trying to hold off to get more details on the VMware side of things…

VMware & The Broadcom acquisition
So it’s been about 6 weeks now, and lots of news around this.
Nothing concrete of course, but lots of tidbits of information.
Just a lot of things all going on at once can be a bit…overwhelming?
Dec 11 – Broadcom simplifies Licensing.
Dec 11 – VMware Horizon & VMware Carbon Black “up for sale”
Dec 21 – Broadcom hands VMware Partners “Termination Notice”
Dec 29 – Broadcom ending VMware Channel Program.
Jan 8 – William Lam Highlighting VCF and VVF and other offerings
Jan 17 -Himanshu Singh posted VVF (VMware vSphere Foundations)
Jan 16 – Aria Simplification (licesnsing, cause its part of VCF now)
(VCF – vCloud Cloud Foundation, and VVF – VMware vSphere Foundation)

Well, the last update of the year….
Just did a quick check….
I’ve been doing this now for 5.5 years, and have posted 147 of times….
Funny how it just became a habit.

VMware CBT bug – revisited after 8 years….
Remember 2015 when vSphere 6 had a CBT bug?
No….lucky you.
I remember, and had a customer impacted for weeks!
This affects vSphere 8.0 Update 2.
CBT’s QueryChangedDiskAreas may lose some data changed on the disk after disk is hot-extended. It only happens on ESXi 8.0u2

VMware Simplifies Licensing Model
We will see…I have mixed feelings on this.
No more potential to renew S&S for Perpetual licensing…all subscription.
They mention a price reduction for VCF licenses.

While the post doesn’t say anything specific, many of us foresaw that this was going to happen.

VMware Security Update
This CVE requires an update to VMware Tools.
You do Update VMware Tools, right?
For linux OS’s, use the appropriate package manager to update open-vm-tools.

VMware acquisition … we are still waiting….
For whatever reason, the Broadcom acquisition of VMware has not been completed at the end of October.
Read into that what you will.

Virtual Updates 2023-10-23

HyperV VMs with Oct 2023 patches do not reboot
Ouch.
Microsoft patch KB5031364 can make Hyper-V VMs unbeatable.
Similar issue arose in ESXi 7.0.2 a few months ago (patching to ESXi 7.0.3 fixed it).
This one applies to Windows Server 2022 VMs with Secure Boot enabled.

Another reason to NEVER allow admin interfaces to be accessible from the internet…..

MGM Resorts – Initial Analysis
I’m sure you’ve heard about this by now.
Here is an initial analysis posted on cyber ark.

vSphere 8.0 Update 2
So yes, another maintenance release.
BUT, some cool things were added.
My first favorite, is using “deploy from template” workflow…using an answer file, and joining an AD Domain, you can now specify an OU (Organization Unit) for the computer object.
This is configured in “VM Customization Specifications”
ou=Microsoft,ou=Servers,ou=prod,dc=vmware,dc=wei
